Today’s Writing Update

with 13 comments

Folks, I haven’t posted much this past week due to the whole controversy over SOPA and PIPA — the two controversial bills that are currently sitting in the United States Congress that, if passed, would likely muzzle the Internet and independent blogs like this one.

However, it’s time for a writing update, so here goes.  Most of what I’ve done is in the realm of planning or outlining; actual, fiction writing has been at a minimum, something I’m hesitant to discuss most of the time because a writer who can’t write seems almost as useless as a fish who needs a bicycle (feminist allusion intended).

I’ve been sick for weeks (sinus issues, mostly, which have exacerbated my asthma), which isn’t conducive to creativity.  Whatever’s wrong this time appears to be a viral thing which I have to just wait out rather than anything that can be cured by antibiotics; this is very frustrating.  All I can do is try to grab some extra sleep when it’s available and continue on the best I can otherwise.**

Fortunately, I’m still able to edit or I’d be even more frustrated than I am already.

Anyway, my hope is to get some fiction writing in later tonight or tomorrow if possible; that may well make me feel better even if this viral issue continues unabated.  This way, I might actually be able to report something positive, rather than continue to give the verbal equivalent of the null set regarding the Elfyverse and any other piece of fiction writing that’s currently awaiting a dash of creativity (or at least a wee bit of energy).

** Michael’s advice when I was ill was not to be too hard on myself, and to rest if at all possible as he knew I tend to drive myself too hard as I am my own worst critic.  I’m trying to take his advice.

Jeff’s advice when I was ill was for me to get as much rest as I possibly could and remind myself that I’ll write when I’m feeling a little better, or have had a bit of sleep.  I’m trying to take his advice, too.

  1. I’ve been obsessing over SOPA/PIPA this week too, so you’re not the only one. The sad thing is that a lot of people I know are celebrating its demise, which I think is premature. The bill has been shelved–they’re gonna try to sneak it through again in some form or another.

Hope you feel better soon! I agree with your friends, don’t push yourself too hard. Your body needs the rest.

    • Thanks, Eurobrat. I appreciate your good wishes and kind words.

Yes, I think this is just a battle; we haven’t won the war with regards to SOPA and PIPA — it’s like the fight we’re waging in WI, in a way. We need to keep the fight going even though we decisively won the first battle — that is, we got more than enough signatures to recall Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Kleefisch, and the four R Senators (including my own Senator, Van Wanggaard), but we won’t have won anything until and unless we can get them on out of there. (Former US Rep David Obey said as much this week, and he was right, too, even though he didn’t draw a parallel to SOPA and PIPA.)

Today I just did a little editing. Mostly I’m thinking about the MSS I’m currently hip-deep in; this counts as work, too, even though it’s not work anyone else can _see_. 😉

      • Thinking and planning is some of the most important work which has to be done on any creative project. Sometimes it’s hard to make other people realize that a writer/artist needs as much time and space to think about her projects as she does to actively work on them.

  2. Thanks, Eurobrat. I appreciate that. (It sounds like something Jeff or Michael would say, if either of them were still around to say it. I have no higher praise than that.)

    • Dang, Barb. Now I feel all honored and such o_O

I say it because I have dealt with that problem myself!

      • I’m so glad it’s not just me who has this problem now and again. 😉

As for feeling honored, well, I don’t know what to say about that. (Further deponent sayeth not.)

  3. I know from reading your previous blogs how highly you value Jeff and Michael, hence the honored feeling 😉

    • Thank you very much for reading my blog. (I can’t say that enough.)

Yes, that is true. I just hope Jeff knew it. (Michael definitely knew it. There was no question, no doubt . . . he and I both felt like the most fortunate people alive to be married to one another.)

      • Wow. Have never been married, but that kind of relationship would make it completely worthwhile.

      • That is why I miss Michael so much. He was a truly exceptional man in every way.

Note it wasn’t a first marriage for _either_ of us, though I think that was mostly because he was on the West Coast and I am a Midwestern gal, so we just didn’t get the chance to meet until I was in my mid-30s and he was a bit older. (Not that I cared about his age. It was completely irrelevant.)

We persisted; both of us believed the right person was out there, and Michael knew I was the right person for him right away but was smart enough to take his time. (I was a bit gunshy.) That’s the main reason I believe so strongly in love, but not the type you hear about on those stupid jewelry commercials — _real_ love, that stands by you in sickness, health, dearth, and even in death. If you can find that, it’s worth every single thing you have to deal with to get it because it helps lift you up.

  4. I’m hopeful that I may have found it. Time will tell.
